Dishes coming out dirty or wet, water left at the bottom, or a machine that won't start? Our local technicians repair built-in and portable dishwashers in kitchens across Leander.
These are the dishwasher problems we get called about most. Open a question to see the usual causes and what you can safely check before you call.
In models that heat-dry, an element at the bottom of the tub warms the air after the final rinse. When it burns out, dishes come out wet. Some brands dry by condensation and have no heater at all.
Rinse aid helps water run off instead of beading on dishes. If the dispenser is empty or stuck, more water stays behind.
A vent or small fan lets moist air out at the end of the cycle. If it stays shut or the fan stops, the steam settles back on the dishes.
Quick check: Refill the rinse aid and turn on the heated dry option if your model has one. Plastic items dry poorly in any dishwasher, so a few damp ones are normal.
Most newer dishwashers have a filter under the lower spray arm that you are meant to clean by hand. Food builds up there and starts to smell.
Bits of food can catch in a kinked or sagging drain hose and rot between washes.
If the tub does not drain fully, dirty water sits at the bottom between cycles and the smell grows.
Quick check: Twist out the filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under the tap, and put it back firmly. Run the hot water at your sink before starting the dishwasher.
Worn bearings in the wash motor make a grinding or whining noise that gets louder as the cycle runs.
Glass, bones or fruit pits can get past the filter into the pump. You hear rattling or grinding when the water starts moving.
A cracked or loose spray arm can wobble and knock against racks and dishes on every turn.
Quick check: Spin each spray arm by hand to make sure nothing on the racks blocks it, and check the filter area for anything hard that fell through.
The small latch that holds the door shut can wear or crack, so it never lets go during the cycle.
The actuator is the part that releases the latch at the right moment. If it fails, the detergent stays locked inside.
The board sends power to the actuator during the wash. If that signal never arrives, the dispenser stays closed.
Quick check: Make sure tall pans or cutting boards are not blocking the dispenser door. Fill the cup only when it is dry, because wet detergent can clump and jam it.
