No heat, clothes still damp after a full cycle, a burning smell or loud thumping? Our local technicians repair electric and gas dryers in homes across Leander.
These are the dryer problems we see most often. Open a question to see the usual causes and what you can safely check before you call.
Lint slips past the screen and settles around the heating element or gas burner. When it heats up it gives off a burning smell, and it is a real fire risk.
A motor with worn bearings runs hot and can smell like burning plastic or oil, often with a hum or a squeal.
A slipping belt or worn felt glides rub against the drum. The friction smells like hot rubber and gets worse with every load.
Quick check: Stop the dryer and unplug it, then clean the lint screen. If you have a gas dryer and smell gas rather than burning, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Two metal bars inside the drum sense when clothes are dry. Dryer sheet residue coats them, so the dryer decides the load is done while it is still damp.
This thermostat switches the heat on and off to hold the right temperature. When it fails, the heat cuts out early and the clothes stay wet.
When hot air cannot get out, a safety thermostat shuts the dryer down to protect it. It looks like the dryer simply quits mid-cycle.
Quick check: Wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with a cloth and a little rubbing alcohol, clean the lint screen, and check that the outside vent flap opens while the dryer runs.
Lint in the vent duct or a crushed hose traps hot air inside the dryer. It is the most common cause and also a fire hazard.
If the thermostat sticks closed, the heater never cycles off and the drum keeps getting hotter.
An element that shorts against the dryer cabinet can keep heating even when the controls tell it to stop.
Quick check: If the top or sides of the dryer are too hot to touch, stop it and unplug it. Make sure the vent hose behind it is not crushed and the outside vent is not blocked.
On dryers with a dial, the timer moves the cycle forward. If its small motor stops, the cycle never reaches the end.
A relay on the control board can stick closed and keep the motor running after the cycle should be over.
If the sensor never reads the clothes as dry, auto-dry cycles keep going far longer than they should.
Quick check: Try a timed dry cycle instead of auto-dry. If the dryer still will not stop, unplug it and leave it off until it is checked.
A dryer problem can also be a safety problem, so it helps to have a team nearby that you can actually reach.
